Return Of The Yale Co-Op

This exciting news comes via Christopher Bastin himself.  New Haven, Connecticut is getting it's very own Gant campus store.  This joint venture with Yale is much more than a return to their roots.  This, ladies and gentlemen, is a return to their birthplace.  The store will house Gant's main line as well as select pieces from the Rugger and Gant by Michael Bastian lines.  This will also be the only place where you can find a limited edition run of "Yale Co-Op" shirts.  These beauts will be hitting the store in March and will feature many of the same vintage fabrics that were sold at the original Co-Op.  Ivy style may have never left, but it is sure as hell back.  Also, in somewhat related news, the Union Made stamps featured on Gant Rugger's shirts are being removed.  Thanks to feedback, some of which can be seen in various Sart Inc post comments, Chris has decided to change things up.  In his own words, "The Union Made stamp used is a replica of the one that has been on the shirts since 1949.  But, you're right, it shouldn't be there if it ain't made in the US by union workers.  I've been a bit ambivalent about it too, reading blogs like this and keeping an ear to the ground really helps us do better and get our shit together.  Stamp is gone starting from Spring 11 and onwards."

  1. Considering MB for Gant charges $295 for a pair of corduroy shorts, maybe they could try making them in America and charge, oh, I don't know, $305?

  2. And why can't it be made in the USA by union workers? Dropping the stamp was one of two ways to make the label accurate -- just not the one that will convince me to pay premium prices for his products, no matter the quality.

  3. more faux heritage garbage. Could not agree with incredulous more. I'm sure the real Yale Co-Op was filled with sweatshop clothes that cost hundreds.

  4. Anon @4:21- I'm not sure how much gear cost back in the day, but the original Yale Co-Op was filled with American made goods. No sweatshops involved.

  5. Those cord shorts, as well as the rest of the bottoms in the MB line are made in Italy champ.

  6. Anon @11:41- I'm probably the biggest MB supporter on the Internet, but as far as I know Gant by MB is made in Portugal.

Takes nothing away from the quality however. I own a few pieces and they are truly incredible value.

  7. I attended Yale as a graduate student from 1958-60. I knew the coop in the golden years. It had everything, including shirts, ties, trousers, shoes, and the boatneck sweaters that were used for various teams, with or without the Y or Yale. My first boatneck sweater, bought in 1958, cost $12.95. Lands End featured one about 20 years ago for $24.95. Recently, after looking everywhere on the Internet, I bought one, different design, less flex in the neck, from Grasscourt, at $260, supposedly hand knit. Are any of these items for purchase in the new store.
